Yankee pitcher Joba Chamberlain was pulled over for speeding last October. The state trooper who stopped Chamberlain found an open container of Crown Royal in the passenger seat of the vehicle. Smelling alcohol on the 23-year-old starter’s breath, the trooper administered a DUI test, which Chamberlain failed. He plead guilty to drunk driving last week, which resulted in a 60 day license suspension, and nine months of probation.
Joba Chamberlain, was born Justin Louis Heath, in Lincoln, Nebraska September 23, 1985. His parents, Jackie Standley and Harlan Chamberlain, split up when Joba was 18 months old.
When Chamberlain was little, his younger cousin couldn’t pronounce her brother Joshua’s name correctly, calling him Joba. Harlan Chamberlain, took a liking to the nickname, and started referring to his son Justin as Joba. Harlan believed the name was “dynamic” and so did Justin who eventually legally changed his name to Joba.
Joba attended Lincoln Northeast High School, where he served as a bat boy. He graduated from Lincoln, but didn’t go straight into playing college level ball. Instead he stayed at home to work, helping the family pay bills.
Chamberlain began his college play with the University of Nebraska- Kearney Lopers. He then transferred over to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he helped the Cornhuskers win the 2005 College World Series.
In 2007, Chamberlain found a home in the Major Leagues with the Yankees, who he still currently plays for. He struck out the first batter he ever faced in his major league debut.
Chamberlain was arrested in Nebraska for suspicion of driving under the influence, speeding, and having an open container of alcohol in the car. He plead guilty to drunk driving, and had his license suspended for 60 days, and was also placed on probation for nine months.
