According to authorities a 32-year-old woman dove into an enclosure reserved for polar bears, and was bitten numerous times on her arms and legs. She was nibbled on only by one of the four adult polar bears, but not by the world renowned polar bear Knut, who was just a few yards away in another enclosure.

According to Heiner Kloes, a zoo spokesman, the keepers pushed the bear away and pulled the woman out from the enclosure, which is surrounded by a fence, a line of prickly hedges and a wall, a comprehensive sign that getting in with the bears was not encouraged, and one which suggests that the woman was very determined.
The woman received treatment at the hospital, her condition has not been made known.

A police representative told the Associated Press:

“The woman has proved herself to be careless by jumping into the enclosure, Logic tells us that polar bears will do this type of thing in this situation.”
