The NASA shuttle launch will take place today (May 11, 2009) from the Kennedy Space Center at 2:01 PM EDT. The crew aboard the shuttle will attempt to fix the Hubble telescope one last time. The self-assessed “high risk” mission will at least have the weather working in its favor. According to Cape Canaveral weather reports there is a 90 percent chance of good launch conditions. The strenuous 11-day mission will entail five spacewalks that could last up to 7 hours each.

Mission Manager Preston Burch said this about the upcoming launch

“This will be the most challenging servicing mission that’s been faced by our astronauts in terms of the total amount of work.”

If this massive undertaking is successful it will add as many as five additional years of life to the 19-year-old telescope.
