Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament was attacked back in April when three masked men, at least one of which was wielding a knife, jumped out of the bushes and smashed open the windows to his SUV demanding cash. Ament made a break for it, but ended up being jumped by one of the assailants. In the midst of the commotion he received a laceration on his head. In total the robbers got away with $7,000 in money and assets. No one has been arrested in connection with the crime.

Jeffrey Allen Ament was born March 10, 1963, in Havre, Montana. He is an American musician best known as being the bassist for the legendary band Pearl Jam, which also includes band members Stone Gossard, Mike McCready, and Eddie Vedder. He stands out as a unique bass player mainly due to his notable work on the fretless, upright, and twelve-string bass guitar.

Ament grew up in Big Sandy, Montana, a town with less then 700 people. His father was the mayor/school bus driver for the town. He describes his childhood as growing up “pretty poor” and his family as being “hard-core” Catholic.

He started to play the bass as a teen and loved to jam out along with Ramones, The Clash, and The Police records. After graduating Sandy High School in 1981 he went on to attend the University of Montana. He stayed at the university until the graphic design program he was studying was discontinued in the middle of his sophomore year. Leaving for Seattle, Washington in 1983 he got a job working at a coffee shop.

Jeff Ament was in several bands until finding a home with Pearl Jam including: Green River, Mother Love Bone, and Temple of the Dog. Not only did he contribute to PJ’s music substantially, he also made significant contributions to the bands album art work.
