The couple was recently shot and killed in their sleep at their home in Beulah, Florida. Authorities have arrested Wayne Coldiron and Leonard Patrick Gonzalez Jr. and now they are facing murder charges.

A third suspect, Gonzalez’s father, Leonard Patrick Gonzalez Sr., 56, was also arrested for his role in attempting to alter the appearance of the van that was spotted leaving the scene of the crime. Before the arrests, law enforcement officials had spread around the images of the van, which was caught on surveillance video footage the night of the murders.

Byrd and Melanie Billings lived in a rural area near the Alabama / Florida state line. At the time of the killings, eight young children were in the home. The children were not injured, and have since been staying with relatives.

The real question we all have has been about motive. A seemingly caring couple, known for their compassion was killed as they slept. Who would do such a thing, and why?

According to an arrest report, Gonzalez Sr. claims that his son and Coldiron entered the home to commit a robbery, but that he was not aware of who shot Byrd and Melanie Billings. However, local authorities claim there are “movie-like twists and turns” in the case, and are also still seeking additional suspects. This has led many to speculate that it is doubtful this case will turn out to be a simple robbery gone wrong.
