Oil giant BP fined $87 million by OSHA. After a 2005 explosion, BP was supposed to clean up their act, but now they’re being fined for $87 million. Get the details here.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is not real happy with BP these days. Following a 2005 explosion in Texas that left 15 dead, OSHA ordered them to take corrective action. After an inspection that took nearly half a year, the administration says the hazards haven’t been repaired.
Not only do they claim BP has failed to make good on the past violations, but they also say new violations have occurred relating to “industry controls on pressure relief safety systems and other precautions.”
Labor Secretary Hilda Solis said:
“An $87 million fine won’t restore those lives, but we can’t let this happen again.”
BP spokesman Robert Wine expressed that the company had in fact made the necessary changes:
“We are disappointed that OSHA took this action in advance of the full consideration of the Review Commission…While we strongly disagree with their conclusions, we will continue to work with the agency to resolve our differences.”
BP has roughly two weeks to either pay the $87 million fine and take steps to comply with the safety regulations, or participate in a hearing to contest the fines.
