Oprah made the huge announcement today that the lights will be going out on her beloved talk show in 2011. OMG no more Oprah, what ever will we do! Oprah dropped the bomb on today’s show. A nice over the past years video segment with old Oprah pictures preceded the announcement.
The Oprah Winfrey show will have been on the air for 25 years when it ends in September 2011. Not even Phil Donahue’s show was on the air that long. Through the years Ms. Winfrey has given her two cents on everything, and I do mean everything. If it was a hot topic Oprah was all over. Celebrities and non-celebrities a like pretty much all flocked to Oprah’s show.
The Big O has built herself an empire fit for a queen and it all started with her talk show. I mean the woman has a book club, her own magazine, starred in an Oscar nominated movie. You get my point she is unstoppable. So if you are a media mogul like Oprah what to you do next, retire? Nope you get yourself your own network and that is exactly what Oprah did. The Oprah Winfrey Network, OWN, will launch in January 2011, a mere 9 months before her talk show says goodbye.
There is a lot of speculation that Oprah will actually move her coveted show to her new network. Although she did not indicate that was happening at all in today’s announcement. However there is plenty of time for the queen of daytime to change her mind. I mean if celebrities can’t go on Oprah how ever will they know they have made it big time.
I know I am still processing this announcement. I am not a huge Oprah fan but she has dominated daytime television for years, it is hard to imagine her not apart of it. No more car giveaways, no more Oprah’s favorite things shows, no more Oprah annoying voice, things sure are going to be different when The Oprah Winfrey Show goes dark.
