A teacher in Hooters, not that big of a deal, but taking her students to lunch while on a school field trip – a pretty big deal. Find out why choir director Mary Segall, a teacher, took her students to dine at Hooters, a place known for busty girls in short shorts and tight tank tops.
Mary Segall, a choir director in the Paradise Valley school district in Arizona, escorted 40 of her students to a performance in downtown Phoenix last week. It was a school day and an official school activity, so a trip to Hooters would be definitely be deemed inappropriate. So why did she feel it was okay?
Segall claims that there were no other venues for lunch that could accommodate the number of people she had with her. However Paradise Valley school district spokeswoman Judi Willis feels differently,
“We believe that there are many venues for lunch for a large group of people in the downtown Phoenix area. There could have been a choice that might have been more appropriate, given that it was a school-day event with a school employee in charge.”
Hooters is a chain of restaurants, known for wings, beer, and girls wearing their signature white tank top with the “Hootie the Owl” logo , which is paired with the notoriously short orange shorts. The Hooters Girls also put out a bikini calendar, as you can see in the full gallery of pictures below. Clearly this is not an appropriate place for a teacher to take students, and as a parent I would be quite upset.
Mary Segall, who has taught in the district for more than 23 years, is currently on administrative leave. However the teacher had already planned on retiring in January, and Willis says it is unclear if she’ll return before then.
So readers what do you think? How should this go down? Do you feel that the district is over reacting or do you think that as a teacher Mary Segall was clearly in the wrong for bringing her students to Hooters? Tell me in the comment section, after checking out the pictures and video of the Hooters girls below.

Totaly inappropriate. Teacher should be fired and have pension suspended indefinitely

Not a big deal at all. The only problem I see is the uptight and overreactive school administration, that’s what we should really be concerned with.

What is the difference between this and what they see on t.v. or the internet on a daily basis or other sources. Not a huge deal considering that parents do not usually sensor what their kids watch today.

I disagree. She should NOT be fired for one indiscretion. She has been teaching there for 23 years and this one thing is what she’ll be remembered for.

We should have such teachers who are bold enough to take steps and then stick to their actions. She could’ve apologized later but she was courageous enough to stand on what she did! bravo.
