Every professional athlete, artist, and musician draws inspiration from someone or some thing. In this case, Uruguayan soccer (futbol) star Diego Forlan looks to his sister.

As his team prepares to begin the final push to make it to the top, he will have his hermana on his mind as he takes to the field. But what makes their brother-sister bond so special?

It all started back when Alejandra Forlan was just twelve years old. She was in a terrible car accident that claimed the life of her boyfriend. Sadly, the accident rendered her paralyzed, and only able to achieve mobility with the help of a wheelchair. But the cost of the related medical procedures would become crippling in its own right.

At the time, the family had virtually no way of footing the bill, which was nearly $250,000. Luckily, Forlan’s mother met former 80s soccer star Diego Maradona, who was gracious enough to help.

Seeing a successful man who was able to step up for his family inspired Diego Forlan, who was just 12 years old. From that moment on, Diego felt driven to become a professional footballer in order to better look after his family.

Alejandra recalled her brother’s vision for greatness immediately following the accident:

“The first thing he said to me while I was lying in the hospital was that he would be a famous soccer player, and that he would get the money needed so the best doctors in the World can treat me.”

Very rarely does such a young person have the foresight to set such lofty goals. Regardless of what team you are pulling for in the semi-finals, it’s hard not to keep an eye on Forlan as his team faces The Netherlands today.
