Former governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin, certainly has been under a lot of scrutiny, and has been the bud of many jokes (not without reason), but the latest of these jabs may have really crossed the line. After an episode of FOX’s hit television show “Family Guy” aired last Sunday, things turned sour for Sarah and her family.
This episode was plenty controversial as it seemed to have touched on a bit of a touchy subject: Palin’s youngest child, Trig, who suffers from Down syndrome. On the show, teenager Chris Griffin goes on a date with a rude girl who has Down Syndrome.
After she bosses him around a bit, Chris asks her about her parents, to which she responds, “My dad’s an account and my mom’s the former governor of Alaska.”
What was the response to this?
Well, after this public jab, Sarah spoke out about it on Facebook, referring to the episode as a “kick in the gut.” She wasn’t the only one to say something about”Family Guy”. Her 19-year-old daughter, Bristol Palin, took it in to her own hands, calling them “heartless jerks.”
Bristol also said that being in the public eye, one would need a thick skin and that she and the rest of her siblings have learned how to cope with media attention. However, it’s unacceptable to be making fun of the youngest child. As a response, the actress who provided the voice of the girl with Down syndrome had a few things to say as well.
Her name is Andrea Fay Friedman and she does truly have Down syndrome. She wrote a letter to the New York Times, where she criticizes Palin for not being able to take a joke. She also accuses Palin of using her son, Trig, as a tool for sympathy in hopes of getting votes during the Presidential Election. However, the Times actually left it out of the public letter. In the original letter, she writes:
“My mother did not carry me around under her arm like a loaf of French bread the way former Governor Palin carries her son Trig around looking for sympathy and votes.”
Yowza. So, what do you think? Did “Family Guy” push it too far or are Palin and her family overreacting? Andrea also spoke about it publicly in an interview with the Insider. Check it out in the video below:
