Conan O’Brien has openly stated that he will quit NBC’s ‘Tonight Show’ if it gets bumped to a later time slot. Conan has been the host of the Tonight Show since June 2009 and has suffered an early ratings slump much as former host Jay Leno did. NBC executives are said to be making the move so that they can put Leno back in the 11pm time slot, or make room for scripted programming. More below.

Conan released a statement earlier today describing his thoughts and feelings about potentially leaving the Tonight Show.

In it he says:

“So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction.”

One can’t help but agree with the man! I think it’s appalling how the NBC executives have handled the situation from the start (in fairness, I wouldn’t like to be in their shoes). But moving the show would be a slap in the face to an all-time great late night host.

Leno’s not happy about it either. Both of the comedians have made comments on their shows about the mess that NBC is making. And you wouldn’t think they deserve this after the great careers these two have had. Reuters gives a snapshot of Leno’s career.

Conan, ever the witty comedian, slips in more than a few jibes at NBC while still managing to remain professional.

“It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule.”

Ouch! Touche Conan, I hope they get it all sorted out. If not, the NY Times reports that he may have work at Fox. In the meantime, can’t wait for tonight’s show!
