As a biography, Gabourey Sidibe was born in Brooklyn, New York on May 6, 1983. She’s the daughter of Alice Tan Ridley and Ibnou Sidibe – a former special education teacher turned into singer and a taxi driver. Her parents split up when she was a teenager and stayed with her mother.
Gabby attended The City College of New York and The Borough of Manhattan Community College and aimed for a Psychology degree at Mercy College, New York. She worked as a receptionist, and never thought of starting an acting career, in fact, it wasn’t in her plans because she wanted to be a psychologist.
At 24, Gabby Sidibe landed the leading role, in Lee Daniels film Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire. She admitted later she doesn’t know why decided to attend the audition, (after a friend told about it). She didn’t have any acting experience, just wanted to give it a try. And she got it. In the film, She played Claireece “Precious” Jones, a 16 year-old Afro-American girl – who battles through poverty and abuse and shares credits with Mo’Nique, Paula Patton, Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz and Sherri Shepherd. Gabby is living the dream to become a movie star, the girl who used to sing Mariah Carey’s songs when she was a child, is now sharing credits with her idol in a movie.
Gabourey Sidibe’s Precious performance in Lee Daniels’ film has been recognized by the critics and picked up important nominations and awards, such as the Screen Actors Guild, Independent Spirit Awards, Golden Globes, Cannes and Sundance. Now, the 26 year-old Brooklyn native is in the running for the Oscar Academy Award as the Best Leading Actress. Yes, Gabby Sidibe has been nominated as The Best Actress for her role in Precious.
