The much-anticipated Prom episode of Glee aired tonight (and yes, all the spoiler rumors were true!), and we found out the other week that they would be covering Rebecca Black’s viral hit/disaster ‘Friday’. I bet you guys thought you finally had gotten rid of that song, huh?!
I know it was kind of a shock for me when I heard that they would be using that song during the Prom episode, in which Kurt is unexpectedly crowned queen. That song is SO two months ago. But since Glee seems hell bent on making it relevant again, let’s discuss.
Not that it is particularly difficult to be better than the original, but they did a good job covering it. It is a catchy song, and what made it so terribly wonderful in the first place wasn’t that it was necessarily a bad song (plenty of songs these days could have been written by a 12 year old and make little to no sense yet still sell millions of copies), it was the performance and weirdness of the video make it such a joke. Funny how when good singers actually perform it how it almost seems like a different song all together.
In this case, Puck, Artie, and Sam put a rock-and-roll spin on the song and performed it at McKinley High School’s Junior Prom (which took place on a Saturday…?). Anyway, they knocked it out of the park and have officially managed to have everyone singing it again for at least the rest of the week.
Does anyone else think it’s weird that most of the popular covers of ‘Friday’ have been sung by guys? Stephen Colbert, Meatloaf, and now the guys of Glee have all lent their chops to this song and turned it into a half-way decent tune when all is said and done.
Did you guys see the Prom episode of Glee tonight? What did you think of the show’s cover of ‘Friday’ and the episode in general? In case you missed it, we have the song below (with video from tonight’s episode on the way!), so be sure to check it out and leave us some comments below!
