Joe Wurzelbacher is “Joe The Plumber,” the Ohio plumber was mentioned 25 times during last night’s presidential debate. Wurzelbacher is a plumber that Obama encountered during his quick stop in Holland, Ohio. While knocking on doors encouraging people to vote, Joe came out. He said that no one was asking Obama the hard questions, so he decided to.

Joe Wurzelbacher asked Obama if he believed in the American dream and went on to tell Obama that after fifteen years of working as a plumber and working 12- 15 hour days, he was going to purchase his own business. The business would be over $250,000, and he wanted to know if that meant more taxes for him.

“I’m being taxed more and more for fulfilling the American Dream,” he said to Obama.

Obama attempted to explain his tax plan to “Joe The Plumber”:

“I’m gonna cut taxes a little bit more for the folks who are most in need and for the 5% of the folks who are doing very well – even though they’ve been working hard and I appreciate that – I just want to make sure they’re paying a little bit more in order to pay for those other tax cuts. It’s not that I want to punish your success – I just want to make sure that everybody who is behind you – that they’ve got a chance at success too.”

Immediately after the conversation with Joe Wurzelbacher, Obama stopped his door to door campaign and headed back to prepare for the debate, admitting that Wurzelbacher was good practice.

Last nights debate was the most intense one yet, and both Obama and McCain used “Joe The Plumber,” mentioning him over 13 times in the first ten minutes.

“I want Joe the Plumber to spread that wealth around,” said McCain of Arizona. “Nobody likes taxes. Let’s not raise anybody’s taxes, OK?”

Obama responded: “Well, I don’t mind paying a little more.”

Now Joe Wurzelbacher is “Joe The Plumber,” and he is in high demand on all television news outlets, blogs and youtube videos. He has already done a phone interview with Katie Couric and Joe the Plumber T-shirts and baseball caps are now on sale.

Joe Wurzelbacher’s 15 minutes of fame are still lingering, as the Republicans released a post debate statement: “We will fight for Joe the Plumber.”
