Katherine Heigl says that she will continue playing Dr. Izzie Stevens for as long as the show’s writers want her to. A cake decorated with scalpels and syringes made out of icing was served at the Grey’s Anatomy 100th episode party on Friday. Heigl said that speculation over whether or not she will depart from the popular medical drama is premature.
”I was assuming that at one point and I got a lot of shrugged shoulders and shakes of the head, so I don’t know if that’s a yes or a no. No one will tell me and I don’t know how this is going to go. ‘I don’t know if I live or die. I don’t know how Izzie fares.”
Maybe it’s her close relationship with T.R. Knight, or maybe it’s gratitude for having a job on a show that has made her a household name, but Katherine says that the Grey’s set is ”one of my favorite places to be.”
Grey’s executive producer Shonda Rhimes called the milestone a huge accomplishment and thanked the cast and crew for their efforts. She also dropped a clue about the May 7 episode…
”The only thing I’ll tell you about the 100th is that it takes place on Meredith and Derek’s wedding day. ‘That’s big … and that’s all I’m going to say.”
On last Thursday’s episode Izzie survived brain surgery for her metastatic stage 4 cancer. Rhimes declined comment on what would happen to Heigl’s character. Heigl now says that she’s comfortable balancing working on the show and filming movies during the series’ summer hiatus. She said,
”I’m more than happy to make that compromise. As my agent likes to say, ‘High-class problems. ‘I don’t know if I want to continue for five years working 12 months a year, but I can take at least another year or two.”
It’s up to the writers now, and hopefully the fans. As a fan of the show, I do not want Katherine Heigl to leave the cast. Between Isaiah Washington’s departure, Brooke Smith’s firing for allegedly playing a lesbian character and the return of a deceased Denny, the series needs stability.
