Leah Messer may be the next young parent to be slapped with what I call the âTeen Momâ reality curse. But is the show to blame?
Fans of reality TV have long taken note of the misfortunes that sometimes come to those who spend any amount of time being followed by cameras. It obviously adds pressure to relationships, and can even cause people to become fame hungry.
But when those who already in extremely challenging situations become reality stars the outcome can be devastating.
Weâve seen a few of the young mothers featured on both MTV shows âTeen Mom,â and â16 & Pregnantâ find themselves in serious trouble. Amber Portwoodâs antics lead to a felony arrest, Janelle Evans has been to the slammer at least twice, and now we have our first âTeen Momâ divorce.
Sadly, Leah Messer and Corey Simms are on the outs after only six months of marriage. These two seemed like the only hope that any of the kids on the show may grow up with a nuclear family. They even worked through some serious trust issues early on, and found themselves standing at the altar together.
But as the newly wed parents of twin baby girls, many feared the weight may be too much for their young shoulders to bear.
Most of the information surrounding the reason for their break-up comes from tabloids like In Touch and OK! Magazineâand most of the claims are related to issues of fame and infidelity.
One of the tabs reports that Corey was spending too much time out drinking with friends, and that because of his newly found fame, he âcan easily hook up with girls.â
Yet another cites money issues. In Touch quoted âa friendâ of the couple who claims that Corey took a chunk of money the couple had put away and bought a truck valued at $19,000.
In the upcoming season of âTeen Mom 2â we are supposedly going to see the fall out as it happened, which includes Leah weeping over divorce papers.
All of this begs the question: would they still be together if it werenât for the show, or is there a real curse?
