They’ve been spotted on Jessica Simpson and even the president, but SNL coined the term mom jeans. Read more and see photos and video here.
What are Mom Jeans? They’re that old pair of jeans that some older women wear, leaving a frumpy pouch just below the front waistline.
But they aren’t exclusively for women. Our own president was ridiculed for wearing them on a few occasions, most notably at the All-Star game, where he delivered the first pitch.
The SNL skit that introduced the term in 2003 was created as a fake commercial, with the great tag line:
“This Mother’s Day, don’t give Mom that bottle of perfume. Give her something that says, ‘I’m not a woman anymore. I’m a mom!’
Since the skit, mom jeans have come to signify the point in a woman’s life where she no longer has any interest in keeping up with fashion trends.
The video showed several actresses sporting the horrid jeans, pulled up close to a foot above the waistline, walking around awkwardly. It has become a classic, and ever since Obama brought out a pair of his own, the term is making a comeback.
