Read details of Charla Nash’s life below, see her photos, and see the Oprah interview on video as well.

As a biography Charla Nash is a 56 year old woman born November 10th, 1953. She was living in Stamford Connecticut when attacked by Travis the Chimp on February 16 2009.

The incident left her blinded with horrific facial lacerations. At 210 pounds the chimp was the size of a large man. It ripped off her nose and hands, and caused other significant damage to her face.

The chimp’s owner named Sandy Herold was her friend. She stabbed the chimp repeatedly with a kitchen knife, and he was soon after shot be police who arrived on the scene.

While in the hospital Charla Nash battled for her life. A team of specialists worked tireless to save her and pieced together what they could of her extremities. A trust fund was set up for her benefit in which the public donated money to her situation.

She tells Oprah that she has no memory of the attack. All she remembers is waking up from a coma in the hospital to hear that she was mauled by a chimpanzee. At least that is what she tells Oprah Winfrey. Chimp victim doesn’t recall attack? Wow!

    Keith Patton Says:

The owner is an idiot. There are two species of chippanzees, the Bonobo and common. The Congo river seperates the two and they developed differently due to pressure for resources and yes, they have been studied to see what pressures cause different social development. The Common chimp can be a very agressive species known to commit fratricide. Due to Hollywood and animal bleeding hearts, all chimps have been lumped into the same group. The Common chimp’s social system is based on a hunting Alpha and beta male led troop. The Bonobo is matriarchal and nonviolent.

The bottom line chimps are strong intelligent animals, not house pets.

    These people are idiots.

    maria Says:

My question is: If she knew the chimp was an agressive animal, and made a complaint with the state of CT – Why the heck she went to her friend’s house that day??? Hellooo. Now you want 100 million?

I feel bad for the chimp

And so are 75% of humans(monkeys)…
humans are the worst the animal kingdom brings and needs to be eradicated…

    Annmarie W. Says:

Of course I feel sorry for all parties, but especially for the chimp. No matter what people say, chimps don’t belong in the home. He did’nt know any better and was just following his instint. I’m sorry he had to die so tragically. People should learn from this.

    Angelo Says:

The chimp was…just being a chimp. I feel terrible for the friend who was attacked. Her life will never be the same. It’s hard to believe that people are foolish enough to keep nature’s wild animals as “pets.” It’s like the bozos who own wolves instead of getting a dog. When these tragic “accidents” happen, suddenly the animal is blamed for being wild. Guess what? They’re meant to be wild.

    myah Says:

the chimp should not of ben treted like a house pet it is a wild animal thats probobly why it atacked

Re Karl’s comment of 11 Nov 6:35 am “humans are the worst the animal kingdom brings and needs to be eradicated…”

Appears to me that Karl is one of the scarier humans….wow.

    myah Says:

like angelo said its a wild animal and you should not have any tipe of willd animal as a house pet.people think that it was his falt but it was hers for keeping him as a house pet.people have wolf, mountanlions, lions, tiger and thing like that.

    Malia Smith Says:

Unfortunately it was not all the chimp’s fault. The owner had just given him some Prozac (or something similiar) to camp him down that morning. She gave him the wrong dosage which in turn threw him into a rampage. If she hadn’t given him this medication this may not have happened at all!

The chump “owner” the chimp “the unfortunate” and the infamous cop “THE HERO UNLOADING HIS GUN” Typical ending.

  14. 14
    Debra Berry Says:

I feel bad for this lady, but really wonder what she was doing in that home in the first place. This was not the first time Travis had behaved aggressively. He’s an adult male chimp that should have been donated to a zoo or wildlife rescue group years ago. He might have been the size of a large man, but had the strength of several large men. The strongest professional athlete wouldn’t stand a chance in a fight with him. She’s lucky she escaped with her life; that chimp might have killed both her and the owner.

  15. 15
    andy Says:

The chimp went ape and had to be eliminated. No big deal, the same as you would with a rabid dog. The owner of the chimp deserves to have her face ripped off for being so stupid.

Lawsuits!? Heck yeah… sue the chimp owner for every nickel she ever had.

  16. 16
    amanda Says:

I’m curious to know if the woman called the proper animal control before calling her friend. If my dog got out I wouldn’t be calling my friend, I’d be calling the local dog catcher to help lure him back. I’m disturbed by the events that took place, but I’m sure it could have been a lot worse. Could you imagine what the chimp would have done to a defenseless child? I’m sure the reaction to the attack would have had a different response from the public then! I blame the owner of the chimp 100% If you know your animal is out of control, call the correct people the first time and have it put down or relocated to the proper environment, please!!!

Anyway, Le Dude digs sexy chimps.

    Le Dude Says:

Whoa … Le Dude is getting drunk. *staggers, sways, falls from a tree branch onto the ground* Here I am, drinking for all us chimps out there … There’s a lot of us chimps. We’re champs. Chimp champs. Champ chimps. *busts out laughing in a drunken stupor, then takes another swig*

Anyway, any sexy chimps out there today?! I’d like to do some, um, fun things. And i don’t just mean swing from a tire if you know what I mean. *winks*

  23. 23
    Victor Says:

Karl – like the other poster said, Please eradicate yourself.

This is a tragic event caused by dumb people and dumb authorities. Who authorized this monkey to live in a home and why? Who keeps a monkey, albeit one who is sick and needs medication in a home??? I hope everyone involved learns a lesson and I’m happy that everyone gets sued, if that’s what it takes to protect me and my family from dumb people and wild animals.

  24. 24
    Trena Says:

I used to work at a zoo. Monkeys and apes are very cute and can be nice, but they are wild animals – very strong wild animals. They can turn on someone instantly for no apparent reason. If this victim had been a friend for any length of time, she obviously knew the risk when she willingly went to the house to help. She had to know she was putting herself in a dangereous situation. Stupid!!! But then again people file stupid law suits all of the time and win. Such a shame.

  25. 25
    ANNETTE Says:

Well said Victor. Do any of you besides Victor, have spell check?

  26. 26
    Debbie Seger Says:

With the kind of injuries suffered to her head, she surely had a concussion. Anyone with a head injury or concussion has compounds released in the brain, often permanently blocking memory leading up to the injury. This can be previous seconds, minutes, hours, or even days. Of course she has no memory of the attack!
As far as the animal, many a good dog has also attacked because of something triggered. It could have been fear from something she wore or did, viewed as a threat. We love our pets, but they are animals, not humans.

  27. 27
    JGLord Says:

Many note here it was and is a wild animal. But be it wild or tame like fido or kitty all animals will attack all animlas will bite. Only a fool thinks or feels they will not. And to those who say this group or that group of chimps will not kill get real both do the same thing just not as often take off those rose collored glasses and open your eyes to the real world, violence occures less often for one has better food resources than the other.

  28. 28
    Le Dude Says:

I agree entirely with what Le Dude has said.

    Zohar Says:

Karl has the soul of a chimp. could you think a little more human?

  30. 30
    troy Says:

I can’t believe they killed the chimp, he was a wild animal and should be respected not treated like a common pet, not that I wish harm on anybody but she kind of deserved it

  31. 31
    Mike Says:

I don’t get it – people that hold wild animals in captivity need to learn that these animals are not domestic pets – their instincts are to survive and fight for their territory. I feel worse for the Chimp than I do for this person. Not to sound morbid, but that Chimp should have not been killed because of one person’s stupidity! I think that Trust Fund should be allocated towards the preservation and protection of Chimps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  32. 32
    Cathy Says:

Karl – Can we start with you?

  33. 33
    Jordan Says:

Humans are the worst. Animals are innocent.

  34. 34
    steve Says:

Wild animals are just that…..wild animals! They live by instinct in a world in which they are born and are a part of a specific culture. They behave as they need to in their culture. Humans have their own world and culture and the cultures of wild animals and humans cannot be successfully integrated.
In essence, leave wild animals in the wild….it’s where they belong!

  35. 35
    pam Says:

i think this women was dumb she shouldn’t even have had that chimp she will learn from her mistakes

  36. 36
    Le Dude Says:

C’mon everyone! Who here agrees with Le Dude?!

Sounds to me that he holds the unique position of being able to clearly deliver the primate perspective. Plus, he sounds intelligent and makes very interesting points.

My vote is for Le Dude!

  37. 37
    Ted Says:

Justified killing is a justified killing, if a monkey attacked one monkey and then a bunch of other monkeys came to help the monkey being attacked, and then the attacking monkey died because of it, it would be just as justified as in the context involved with humans. (read it slowly, I know)

  38. 38
    Gary Hiigel Says:

Feel for the chimp, he is a wild animal no matter what the lady gave him or how long he has been “domesticated”.

Humans are the most aggressive animal on the planet; we are not civalized. Look at the Headlin news every day to see that. The daeth toll in Iraq abd Afghanistan?? How many have to die.

Religon is by far the tops for killing people in the name of God.

  39. 39
    Cooltraveler Says:

And so are 75% of humans(monkeys)…
humans are the worst the animal kingdom brings and needs to be eradicated…

Apparently, some humans hate their own species. Dont usually find that in the animal kingdom,a new low for some humans. If you hate the human race so bad, and needs to be eradicated,by all means, you go guy, you first.

  40. 40
    nic rossouw Says:

it would be great if people would know the facts before spouting off on these forums. the woman who was attacked was trying to help the moron owner of the chimp get it to return home. the owner was not injured. i have incredible sympathy for the chimp, who should have been able to live as a wild animal and for the woman who was attacked who suffered horrible trauma as a reward for trying to be a good citizen.

  41. 41
    lordswild Says:

Ms Nash decided that it was “ok”, safe, fine, etc for her to be around the chimp–she accepted that responsibility and any consequences should be hers.

I believe she might not remember because she is or was suffering from dissociative fugue–a state in which the trauma, fear is so great that the mind in essence shuts down for protection from the fearful feelings.

A husband and wife team are representing her.

  42. 42
    Gen Says:

I too feel bad for the chimp and the woman who was attacked. I’m amazed she survived. I don’t think she fully realized the potential danger. No one should be keeping these wild animals as house pets – they are not domesticated. I fault the owner of this chimp, of course for keeping it to begin with -but more so for not immediately calling Animal Control when it was obvious something was very wrong with him. Then she stupidly decides to act like a Vet. and take it upon herself to give it some of her Prescription Meds! Now she needs Prison Time for her negligence and stupidity. And I wish people would stop trying to own such animals that so clearly belong in the wild and not in our homes.

  43. 43
    TB Says:

Sue the owner not the city…ridiculous suit. I hope she gets nothing. I suspect we are already picking up the bill for her enormous medical bills.

  44. 44
    Trin Says:

The Chimp is a wild animal, I don’t care home domesticated they felt it was… and then people freak out when these wild animals attack.. It’s common sense people. They are wild animals to be left in the wild, not to be brougt up as freaking house pets. I feel bad for the chimp!

  45. 45
    Ger Says:

    Karl,

I like your thought and think you should take the lead an off yourself first.

  46. 46
    Lily Says:

First and foremost, my heart goes out to Charla!
It is unforgivable, that if there was already warnings over the chimp’s crazy behavior and having the need to get tranquilizers… the authorities or the vet did not take this animal away, before it would hurt/kill anyone!!! And the owner of the chimp, never should have taken a chance, exposing people and herself to such danger!!! This woman (owner of chimp) should dedicate the rest of her life to care and provide for her friend Charla, after being the sole responsible of this tragedy.
They talk about banning guns, but they should also consider banning wild animals that are meant for the circus, the zoo or a movie set, from living as home pets. Whatever happened to having your typical cat, dog or bird as a pet? What is this crazy need to have animals that at any time can and will turn on people? The instinct of an animal is unpredictable, and more so if the size of that animal will present clear danger, and will place you at a disadvantage, if the need for a fight sould take place.
There’s got to be a law pass immediately in all 50 States to prohibit having as pets wild or so called “exotic” animals!
Again, all my best for Charla’s recovery, as well as her supportive family, and may God give Charla the courage to move forward in life in the best possible way!

    vic Says:

as i recall when this story first broke, after the chimp was killed the owner was very upset about that (seemed more so than what happened to her friend)but on the 911 tape she is screaming to the operator to have the police bring their guns to shoot him….what did she think they should do, try and get their own faces ripped off???? she is a moron and should be prosecuted as such and yes the victim deserves way more than 100 million her life will never be the same, who gives a shit about the chimp!!!!!

    Roy Says:

I wish Travis was still around to rip Oprah’s face off.

  49. 49
    dru Says:

poor karl, humans need to be eradicated uhh, he should be first to step up to the plate, thats the most ignorant thing a human can say about his own king. sure the chimp should not have been concidered a pet, humans have made the mistake of making wild animals pets, and unfortunately both have paid a horrific price, more so for the animals, we want to save animals, give them better treatment when in captivity, but as long as we chose to go see animals in captivity or even in movies these incidents will continue, humans arent to smart when it comes to wild animals, some humans who like karl prove, ignorance and stupidity is strictly a human trait

  50. 50
    JJ Jones Says:

I’m just go ape when I watch the Oprah.

  51. 51
    Cherron Says:

I hate everyone that says they feel sorry for the chimp. How about having a monkey rip your face and then tell us who you feel sorry for? Monkeys don’t make good pets.

  52. 52
    Steve Says:

I have a 25lb house cat (domestic) and even he goes a little wild and scares me, I can’t imagine an animal 250lbs becoming wild again in the home.

We often learn life lessons only after it’s too late.

    Sorry to all parties concerned.

  53. 53
    Cha Says:

As to the victim’s lack of memory, it’s not unusual for a person to have no memory at all after a horrible accident or attack. The “impressions” in the brain just don’t get made sometimes in such a case. They’re just not there.

  54. 54
    JD Saint Says:

Chimps and all other wild animals should be banned from ownership period. This situation should never have happened if some common sense law was applied about what is a pet and what is not. People’s rights for pet ownership should be limited to some dogs, cats and birds. The rest of the animals should be left alone. Having a chimp as a pet is just insane and cruel to boot.

  55. 55
    Mr. Practical Says:

I bet the Chimp, Travis, was a Muslim. They are the violent thugs of the earth.

  56. 56
    The REAL Mr. Practical Says:

No way Travis was a Muslim. He was way too smart for that. We’re talking about a chimp that enjoyed the finer things in life such as wine, cigars, and classical music. Travis could not be brainwashed.

  57. 57
    Macy Elliott Says:

When will human beings realize that the wild is just that — WILD! And, people need to stop interrupting the wild by domesticating these animals! LEAVE NATURE ALONE PEOPLE!!!

  58. 58
    REY Says:

Wild animals are not meant to be house pets!!!thats why they are called WILD ANIMALS!!!!!

  59. 59

Another wild animal attack. Duh…….people need to get smarter than the wild animals and not own them! Woman is an idiot.

    Blah blah blah…minutiae minutiae…drivel…

but wait…what’s this? The voice of reason from the (clearly) omnipotent one Le Dude?

Woe be unto the rest of you for your self-important, boring rhetoric!

  61. 61
    bill Says:

I really have to ask why people watch Oprah for, when she promotes stories like this. Maybe Oprah should have the owner (you know – equal time) of the chimp on to ask her about the bubble baths and the bed time cuddling that she (the owner) did with the chimp. Don’t believe me? Then read the initial news clippings about this story. These people are more than demented. And why do we want this crap on TV – Daytime yet! – Bad enough it made the news!

  62. 62
    Vic Says:

Hello this animals been around for 1000′s of years, well guess we are in their world, we are taking over their space, I’m sorry for what happened to this woman, but remember if you play with fire, you’re going to get burn!!

  63. 63
    Le Dude Says:

Le Dude checking in once again … nice to hear reasonable people like In Summary are involved in this discussion. As I stated earlier, I speak for all chimps (namely due to the fact that I am a chimp). I live alone, pay my bills on time, hold down a job, a mortgage. I’m putting two kids through school … yeah, I drink a little from time to time, but chimps feel stress too.

Anyway, I feel that chimps and other primates (except for Gibbons – ewwww!) should not be owned. Unless there are kegs in the house.

  64. 64
    Grape Ape Says:

I blame her for being so delicious. Dumb woman.

  65. 65
    katcelata Says:

I don’t understand how the city can be sued if they were never called in to control or remove the animal, and as far as 50 million, boy I wish Ms Nash could get it, but how? I doubt the owner has it and I doubt her insurance would even have anything to cover a situation like this.I hope she does jail time though. These animals are never ever safe once they reach maturity, there is a very good interview with Jeff Corwin that goes into that. And most areas don’t even have a real animal control officer, let alone any kind of statutes to cover this- face it, how many times are you called upon to regulate a martini drinking chimp who is forced to live and act like a human? Pure criminal stupidity and abuse on the part of the owner.

  66. 66
    jayR Says:

the damage has been done. we can’t blame the chimp and charla. i guess the lesson here is do not own wild animals as pets. cuz when things go wrong, everyone is a victim.

    jadeona Says:

I dont know I think charla’s face looks better than Orca..Orca went way too far exploiting this poor woman who has no idea how she looks. Shame on you your a disgrace this is somthing I would expect from a trash magazine not Orca..Your a moron orca with no compashion….

  69. 69
    Racheal Says:

Poor chimp. It was fair to keep the chimp locked up, its a wild animal. which means wild animals stay in the wild. The owner of the chimp is an idiot. Nex time call animal control and get thte heck out of the house. And for the lady that was attacked, you deserve all the money you want. And I praise you for your good attitude towards life still. May god be with you. <33
