Since Rebecca Black became an overnight internet sensation (and laughing stock) with her popular-because-it’s-so-bad song “Friday”, pretty much everyday has been Friday! Almost every comedian has remixed or spoofed the song, but Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon took it to a whole new level.
Instead of just making a funny short for their shows, the two decided to make a friendly (and charitable) bet. Whoever raised the most money for a charity won the bet, and unfortunately (or maybe not so unfortunately for us and the charity) Colbert lost. His price: he had to perform “Friday” on Jimmy’s show last night.
Fallon managed to raise more than $26,000 for DonorsChoose.org, an education charity that lets donors allocate their funds to specific needs posted by schoolteachers throughout the country to help them meet fund raising goals for their classrooms.
The bet went something like this: Stephen Colbert has been hyping up the auction of his interesting self-portrait for a few weeks now on his show. Last week, he sold the painting for $26,000 and donated the proceeds to DonorsChoose. For really no reason at all, he proclaimed that Jimmy Fallon would match that amount, which Fallon had never actually agreed to do. The bit continued when Colbert made an appearance on “Late Night”, at which point Jimmy proposed that if he raised the $26,000 by Friday that Colbert had to sing the namesake song on his show. By reaching out to his fans, Fallon was able to raise the money in the allotted time and Colbert had to pay up.
Of all the “Friday” spoofs I have seen, this one takes the cake. I think people forget that Colbert has won a Grammy, because his singing skills certainly aren’t lacking. Dapper as usual, Colbert and The Roots belted out a great rendition and were even joined by Jimmy and some other very special guests. If you missed all the action last night, don’t you fret because you can check it out right here!
